Artist StatementRick Clubb

An initial response whether painting or sculpture coherently originates from human emotion...

Wood becomes animated when it begins new life with the assertive action of carving. From a flat surface a theme emerges as wet paper floats in a mixture of water and paint. A pattern of relationships develops when emotions and ideas interact with each other. The concept maybe real or imagined, but the human emotion that motivates the piece is always perceived.

In my realistic style I rely on the attributes of watercolor paints to build layered transparencies making illusive feelings and emotions visible. As a contrast I add opaque casein paints to my palette because they have a chalky fugitive quality that compliments a light transparent wash.

The open trepidation of a horizontal surface of paper similar to a smooth surface of wood necessitates a positive action. It is an exhilarating experience to gouge a well honed carving chisel into wood in the same way a deep wash of watercolor gives certain affirmation.

The spiritual essence of my figurative sculpture is at its best portrayed in the warmth of wood. Vehicles for emotional content are the illusion of space in my painting.
